Yasmine Hamdan is a Lebanese singer, songwriter and actress widely regarded as a pioneering icon of underground indie music across the Arab world. Born in Beirut in 1976 and now based in Paris, she is known for a distinctive sound blending traditional Arabic vocal styles with poetic lyrics and contemporary electronic and trip-hop production. She first rose to fame co-founding the band Soap Kills with Zeid Hamdan in Beirut, recognized as the Middle East's very first indie-electronic act; after moving to Paris, she partnered with producer Mirwais, known for his work with Madonna, to release the album "Arabology" (2009) under the alias Y.A.S. She reached a wider global audience appearing as herself and performing the song "Hal" in Jim Jarmusch's film "Only Lovers Left Alive" (2013), and has built a solo discography including "Ya Nass" (2013), "Al Jamilat" (2017) and "I Remember I Forget" (2025), a deeply personal exploration of displacement and memory.
