Volkan Öktem
Volkan Öktem is one of Turkey's most respected and versatile jazz drummers and studio musicians, known for a stylistic range spanning jazz, pop, folk and fantasy music. Born in İzmir in 1970, he started drumming at age 7, moved to Ankara in 1985 where he performed with singer Alpay for three years, then turned to jazz working with master pianists like Tuna Ötenel. From 1993 he became a founding member of Laço Tayfa in Istanbul alongside clarinet virtuoso Hüsnü Şenlendirici, playing worldwide including at New York's Central Park, and shared stages with jazz giants like John Scofield. In recent years he has continued making music with Sonic Boom, a synth-pop and jazz-funk project he co-founded with Çağrı Sertel and Alp Ersönmez.
