Sarathy Korwar

Composer Musician

Sarathy Korwar is a US-born, India-raised, London-based drummer, percussionist, composer and bandleader whose music blends jazz, Indian classical music, electronic and hip-hop, and who is regarded as one of the most distinctive voices on the UK jazz scene, tackling powerful socio-political themes of decoloniality, race, community and identity. Raised in Ahmedabad and Chennai in India, he began playing tabla at age 8-10, developed an interest in jazz through radio (especially Ahmad Jamal and John Coltrane), switched to drums at 16, and later moved to London where he studied classical tabla under Sanju Sahai at SOAS, focusing on adapting Indian rhythms to Western percussion instruments. Following his debut album "Day to Day" (2016), which fused field recordings of India's Sidi community with modern jazz and electronics, and "More Arriving" (2019), which won an AIM Independent Music Award, he made a major impact with "KALAK" (2022), ranked #2 on The Guardian's best global albums of 2022 and winner of a Songlines award; he also earned two Grammy nominations as co-writer and producer of Anoushka Shankar's 2025 album.
