Michel Godard
Michel Godard is a French tuba and serpent player and composer renowned worldwide in avant-garde jazz and classical music, a living legend known for his extraordinary style blending historic instruments with modern jazz and improvisation. Born in 1960, he is one of the most important figures behind reviving the serpent — the tuba's near-forgotten historic ancestor — for the modern music stage, and despite starting tuba only at 17, he was accepted into the Radio-France Philharmonic Orchestra at just 18. Building unique bridges between classical music, early (baroque/medieval) music and avant-garde jazz, and celebrated for his virtuosity in multiphonic technique, Godard has recorded with Turkish ney master Kudsi Ergüner and performed with Turkey's Şimdi Ensemble on serpent and tuba, as well as collaborating with world music giants like Alim Qasimov and Rabih Abou-Khalil. He currently teaches serpent at the Paris Conservatory (CNSM) while remaining active in his solo career and album work.
