Jülide Özçelik
Jülide Özçelik, born in Istanbul in 1975, is one of Turkish jazz's leading and most original vocalists, composers and lyricists, having played a pioneering role in popularizing Turkish-language jazz by blending traditional Turkish folk melodies and alaturka tunes with modern jazz harmonies. She began her music education at the Müjdat Gezen Art Center's Light Western Music department and later graduated on a full scholarship from Istanbul Bilgi University's Music Department in Vocal Performance, where she studied vocal technique with jazz legend Nükhet Ruacan and took harmony and ensemble lessons from figures like Selen Gülün and Randy Esen. Guided by a philosophy of making music at a universal standard while remaining unmistakably "ours," she interprets both her own compositions and anonymous folk songs in jazz form, releasing the acclaimed debut "Jazz İstanbul Volume-1" (2008) that introduced her to wide audiences, its follow-up "Jazz İstanbul Volume-2" (2011) arranged by guitarist Cem Tuncer, and "Nefes" (2019). Known for her clear voice and silky vocal tone, she is regarded as one of Turkey's most respected female jazz artists and continues performing at major jazz festivals at home and abroad.
