Julia Biel is an award-winning British singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose music seamlessly blends jazz, folk, art-pop and soul; described by The Independent as "the best British vocalist to emerge in an age," she is renowned for emotionally raw vocals reminiscent of jazz's golden age paired with a contemporary, conversational lyric style. Born in London in 1976 to an Afro-European family, she trained first as a pianist but is largely self-taught on vocals and guitar; after studying German and French at the University of Oxford, she committed fully to music and joined the London-based F-IRE Collective to hone her improvisational, genre-fluid style. Her solo career took off after she won the prestigious Perrier Young Jazz Vocalist of the Year award in 2000, releasing her self-produced debut album "Not Alone" in 2005 and, a decade later, "Love Letters and Other Missiles" (2015), which earned a MOBO Award nomination; she has collaborated extensively with the Mercury-nominated jazz act Polar Bear, co-written club hits with Ben Watt of Everything But The Girl, served as a core member of the afrobeat/reggae collective Soothsayers, and was personally hand-picked by Bob Dylan to open for him on tour.
