Birsen Tezer is a Turkish singer, songwriter, composer and qanun player widely regarded as one of Turkey's most powerful jazz and alternative music vocalists, known for her mesmerizing, hazy voice. Born in 1965, she showed early promise in the Milliyet Interscholastic Music Competition in 1982-1983, trained in qanun under master teacher Erol Deran at Istanbul Technical University's Turkish Music State Conservatory, and began performing at various venues around Istanbul with collective music groups starting in the early 1990s. Her breakthrough to wider recognition came in 1998 with "Kimseye Anlatmadım," a duet she performed with veteran musician Bülent Ortaçgil on his album "Light"; she has also collaborated with figures like Erkan Oğur, İlhan Şeşen and Jehan Barbur over her career. Staying deliberately out of the media spotlight and focused purely on musical quality, she has built a devoted following through the melancholic, deeply felt songs on albums like "Cihan" (2009), "İkinci Cihan" (2013) and "Kağıttan Kaptanlar" (2023), accompanying herself on qanun.
